April 16, 2019: Staying close to home - Sarrians

Our first thoughts this morning were for Notre Dame and we were glad to hear the fire was out and damage assessment was beginning. We've continued to watch the news as things happen here, 6 to 8 hours ahead of your time.

Dave, Clark and Janis took Nancy to the train station in Avignon. She is now safely at her Paris airport hotel, ready to fly out tomorrow.

We cleaned, did laundry, and bought groceries. I posted about our adventures yesterday. Janis and I made a beef daube for dinner with green beans, pasta and salad. While we cooked, Dave took a walk around town. His first stop was the tourist office, open today. A very helpful lady gave him tons of information on the area around us, including a 3 hour walk around the vineyards of Vacqueyras.

The photos Dave took show that our town of Sarrians also has a long history going back to middle ages.
Medieval Sarrians was surrounded by walls. One turret still remains.
The grapes grown here are also AOC Vacqueyras, which is why you don't see wines labeled Sarrians.
Evidence of medieval streets of Sarrians

The church is very plain on the front and is on a very small square.

Remains of city walls of Sarrians.
Judy - check out the flamingos. Again evidence that where there is not a garden space, there can still be flowers.

The butcher
The baker...but no candlestick maker.

This is where you turn down the street off the main road: Rue des Grives

Purple shutters. Yes or no?

This pony lives just past our house. A dog training yard is at the corner.

We did a taste test between two red wines - one that we bought at the grocery store for 5 Euros called "Plan de Dieu" (the name of the commune of 4 small villages where this wine is made). The other was a 28 Euro Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2016. Our verdict is that the Châteauneuf-du-Pape isn't 5.6 times better than the "Plan de Dieu" (plan of God). So we'll continue getting this at the grocery store and find other sources for the Châteauneuf. You pay a lot for the name, we think.

Sheets and towels are washed and ready for our next guest. Judy arrives tomorrow on the 5 pm TGV from Paris. It's been nice to have a day at home. A bit of ice cream and then bed as tomorrow there's a planned hike around Vacqueyras.

It's good to have a quiet day at times, especially when it's raining.
